Career Biography

Dara Lovitz earned her B.A., magna cum laude, from the University of Pennsylvania, where she was a member of the Golden Key National Honor Society. She received the Law Faculty Scholarship to attend Temple University Beasley School of Law. While at Temple, she received the Barrister Award for Excellence in Oral Advocacy. She was elected by her classmates to be the class speaker at graduation in May 2003.

In March 2005, Ms. Lovitz was appointed Legal Chair of the Pennsylvania Chapter of the Sierra Club. As Legal Chair, she is responsible for coordinating state litigation, providing legal counsel on conservation issues, and general legal representation of the chapter.

In July 2006, Ms. Lovitz began volunteering her time as legal consultant to Mercy For Animals (MFA), a non-profit organization designed to combat the unnecessary suffering of animals. Nathan Runkle, Executive Director of MFA, said: "It was a true pleasure working with Dara Lovitz. Dara was extremely knowledgeable, helpful, accommodating, and patient. She always provided her expert assistance in a timely manner and her advice was simply invaluable." (quote from Ms. Lovitz provides free legal counsel as well to Coalition for New York City Animals and Showing Animals Respect and Kindness, an Illinois-based non-profit animal advocacy organization.

Later in 2006, Ms. Lovitz was appointed Special Prosecutor by the Lancaster County District Attorney to prosecute the pivotal Pennsylvania case, Commonwealth v. Esbenshade, in which the Elizabethtown, Pennsylvania district court determined the criminal liability of a battery-cage egg production facility owner and supervisor under Pennsylvania’s animal cruelty statute.

In June 2007, Ms. Lovitz was appointed board member of Four Feet Forward, an organization that helps grass-roots animal advocacy organizations with their legal and media campaigns by offering free professional services.

Ms. Lovitz is currently an Adjunct Professor of Animal Law at Temple University Beasley School of Law.

Ms. Lovitz has lectured and written for the Pennsylvania Bar Institute and the Pennsylvania Trial Lawyers Association for CLE programs in Auto Law, Dog Bite Law, and Animal Law.

Ms. Lovitz’s list of publications includes: (1) Animal Lovers and Tree Huggers are the New Cold-Blooded Criminals?: Examining the Flaws of Ecoterrorism Bills, 3 J. Animal L. 79 (2007); (2) Real Estate and Animals – Legal Issues that Impact Pet Owners, Pennsylvania Bar Institute – Fifth Annual Animal Law Seminar, 2008; (3) Atypical Claims in Dog Bite (or Dog-Caused) Injury Cases, Pennsylvania Bar Institute – Handling the Dog Bite Case, 2007; (4) Kelo: A Poem for the Condemned, Philadelphia Business Journal, March 31, 2006; (5) Veterinary Malpractice Overview, Pennsylvania Bar Institute - Third Annual Animal Law Seminar, 2006; and (6) Discovery of An Expert’s Financials, Pennsylvania Trial Lawyers’ Association - Auto Law Practice Tips, 2005.

Her most recent article is a book review of GET POLITICAL FOR ANIMALS AND WIN THE LAWS THEY NEED by Julie E. Lewin, and is entitled, Call to Action: Getting Political and Winning Laws for (Some) Animals. It is scheduled to be published in the 2008 edition of the University of Pennsylvania Law School’s Journal of Animal Law and Ethics.
