Career Biography

Katelyn Taylor Czarnik joined Zarwin Baum’s defense group under Theodore M. Schaer, group chair, in 2013 after graduating from Villanova University School of Law.  Katelyn concentrates her practice on complex litigation, primarily defending our clients in trucking, products liability, recreational sports and premises liability matters.

While at Villanova, Katelyn served as a law clerk at Zarwin Baum from her 1L summer through her 3L year.  Katelyn was also chosen by Pepper Hamilton, LLP to participate in their Business and Entrepreneurship Program in their Berwyn office as one of two interns for the spring of 2012.  During law school Katelyn was an active member of the Corporate Law Society and she also represented Villanova Law in the 2013 Transactional LawMeet Competition held at Drexel Law.  During her third year at Villanova, Katelyn participated in the Villanova University School of Law Federal Tax Clinic.  Through the Clinic, Katelyn represented low-income tax payers in reaching an amicable resolution of their issues with the Internal Revenue Service.

Before attending law school, Katelyn worked as a Claims Consultant for a local brokerage firm where she facilitated the claims process for many national trucking companies and commercial property owners.  Through her previous work experience, Katelyn brings constructive knowledge of the insurance industry and a valuable insight into the handling of insurance claims.  Katelyn graduated from La Salle University with a B.S. in Finance and Business Management.  She was a member of the Gamma Phi Beta sorority and participated in many community service projects through her membership.

Representative Matters

Sat second chair in a high profile premises liability rape trial in Philadelphia County in 2017.

Served as associate counsel with Bryan Werley, Esq., for Griffin Campbell in historic civil trial arising from the tragic collapse of a four-story building and destruction of the adjacent Salvation Army thrift store located in downtown Philadelphia.

Successfully drafted 12(b)(6) Motion to Dismiss on behalf of client training facility in high profile high school concussion matter in the District Court for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania.  Schaer and Czarnik Obtain Dismissal with Prejudice in Highly Publicized Federal Court Case.

Successfully drafted Post Trial Motion on the issue of assumption of the risk obtaining judgment notwithstanding the verdict on behalf of rock climbing facility in Chester County Court of Common Pleas.  Schaer Successfully Reverses Jury Award and Obtains Defense Verdict.

Drafted successful appellate brief obtaining affirmance of judgment on behalf of appellant rock climbing facility before the Superior Court of Pennsylvania.  McGarry v. Philly Rock Corp.

Drafted multiple successful Motions for Summary Judgment on issue of lack of duty in slip and fall matter in Philadelphia County on behalf of Center City District.

Negotiated favorable global settlement of Plaintiff’s claims as well as Co-Defendant’s cross-claim for indemnification in Philadelphia County.

Successfully negotiated favorable settlement on behalf of restaurant in slip and fall matter in Bucks County despite allegations of spoliation and claim of TBI.

Drafted successful preliminary objections to claim for punitive damages in Dram Shop action in Philadelphia County.

Assisted in negotiating favorable settlement of Dram Shop action in Burks County.

Successfully argued numerous discovery motions obtaining favorable results on behalf of clients.


Katelyn has attended and represented clients at mediations and settlement conferences, including cases involving catastrophic injury, negotiating favorable outcomes on behalf of clients.

Katelyn has successfully represented clients at multiple arbitrations in Philadelphia County.
