ALERT: The City of Philadelphia's Council Passed a New Law Impacting Businesses with Over 250 Employees

January 2, 2019

The City of Philadelphia’s council passed a new law on Thursday, December 6, 2018 that will require businesses with more than 250 employees and more than 30 locations worldwide to provide employees their schedules at least 10 days in advance. This measure comes into effect in 2020.  The 10 day notice rises to 14 days in 2021. In addition, if changes are made to the employee’s schedules after that, employers will owe employees more money. Employers will also be required to offer more hours as they become available to existing employees who want them rather than hiring new people, and they’ll be banned from retaliating against those who either request or decline more hours. Employees must receive a good faith estimate of how many hours they can expect to work. Further, employees are guaranteed at least nine hours rest between consecutive shifts, or payment of $40 if they agree to work without a sufficient break.
